The Annual BMW Festival & Track Day at Killarney Race Circuit in Cape Town is always an anticipated event. It is open to all BMW owners to bring their vehicles and participate in the Mass Park-Off, Track Activities, and the Parade Lap.
One special factor to the day is that it brings together all the different BMW related car clubs and general public to one specific point. There about 5 active clubs in the Cape Region alone. Clubs that were present this year were, BMW Car Club Cape Town, BMWfanatics, BM Squad, and E30ClubSA.
This year, being held for the 4th time, had a few highlights. It was dominated by the show of some real eye-candyliscious classics. The E12s stole the show. They were represented by a 530mle, a race version of the 530mle, and some 535i’s. Amongst other classics were a 2002, E9 3.0cs coupe, and a couple of 635csi’s. The Park-Off area was amassed with E30s, E36s, 5ers’, some 1ers’ and 1 8er. The ///M contingency didn’t hold back either. The crew from GTS pulled through with some really hot looking E9x M3s in 2door and 4door variants. Another Beemer present which we were just too delighted to see, was a Z3MCoupe,an AC Schnitzer edition, of which only 35 was brought into this country. It is one of my all-time favorite Beemers.
Exhibitors displaying Products and Services were Bruces Spares, Allies Wheels, TarrTech, and Sullies Fabrics who kindly gave away a one-off custom ///M branded wingback chair worth R3999.00 to one lucky draw winner. TarrTech also raffled a Driver Seat to one lucky raffle draw winner who won the chance to actually drive the race car around the circuit.
Open track sessions, although a bit delayed in starting times, ran smoothly until a casualty which resulted in track time being cut short. Driver and car survived though.
The Parade Lap which sees BMWs from early ages to late models on the track at the same time, travelling at a steady 30km/h is always a sight to behold. There were plenty of beemers that didn’t take part although encouraged, but it still was a gloriously fun affair for all involved.
Yaseen Damon provided some drifting action with his E30. Some much needed track time before his participation in a Drift Series competition the week following.
Prize giving was done inside the new pits.
The day ended off with Street2Strip drags which ended about 21:30.
It was a day that everyone involved and participated thoroughly enjoyed.
