With 2 weeks to go, the 2024 edition of our popular TunnelRun was hanging on a thin thread.
The initial meeting spot in the City Centre of Cape Town was compromised by a number of incidents involving unruly BMW drivers in and around the city streets during this year. So due to happenings not of our making, our event suffered. Even though our application was submitted in May already.
This caused 2 weeks of frustration with back and forth emails, phone calls and a meeting with City officials leading up to the 10 Nov 2024.
After persisting that this event could not be cancelled or postponed, we were assisted by the City of Cape Town to secure the Killarney International Raceway as a start venue. Killarney is usually closed on a Sunday due to the complaints from a Table View resident, but provisions were made for us to use the parking area at the admin block on the morning of the 10th Nov from 9am till 10am.
With this change of venue, the usual feeling of the TunnelRun morning was abit different compared to the last 10 years, but in the end it worked out fine.
The variety of BMW vehicles on the day was wonderful to see . The earliest being a classic 2002, to some immaculate E31 8'ers up until the latest G80 M3.
The count of BMW vehicles at the meeting spot stopped at around 280 vehicles with more cars still entering the premises but having to park against the 'back straight, and others missing the meet and joined along the route.'
At 10:15am we had our drivers' briefing and thereafter 100s of BMWs fired up, with anxious throttle-happy drivers ready to do the 120km stretch of road and scenery to Worcester with fellow enthusiasts.
Traffic flow out of Killarney was a bit slow due to the traffic lights only allowing 6 cars at a time, but this acttually helped to ease the flow of traffic onto the public roads and the freeway.
Unfortunately we saw some numb-brains spinning where they were not supposed to, i dunno with these guys, Maybe they dont get enough love at home so they have to seek attention in other ways. These guys dont realise the damage and iconvenience they cause to others. Thats actually worrying for society.
Our end point this year was Kleinplasie in Worcester where we braai'ed for the afternoon, chilled, had good laughs and converstion with our Joburg friends, and then found a spin pitch inside the oval race track on the premises where some M4s and an old school E34 played some tyre'ing entertainment for the crowd.
We would like to thank a few individuals who made it possible for this event to carry on.
The guys at City of Cape Town that didnt give up on us and made a way for us.
AshleyV10 and Kaylene who assisted us at the gates.
RB Photography and Liam our official photographers
Mrs Janice Arries for arranging the Worcester side of things
Paul Simon of Killarney for opening for us.
the Pang Crew for leading the pack
We were joined by a few guys from up country :
- Metesh Naran from Kimberley drove with F30 340i
- Freddy Mzimba and his crew of E30 guys drove to Cape Town from Joburg via Port Shepstone, East London, & George.
They left Gauteng on Monday 04th Nov and got into Cape Town on Thurs 07th Nov after an unforgettable trip.
The other guys were Jermain Williams, Thabo Ramathokai, Berry Keoraptse and their wives whio doubled up as their RoadTripUltimate Support Crew
- Another regular comrade that made the trek to cpt from Jozi is Mr Motlatsi 'Kenny' Mahabuke in his E30 325i
- We were also surprisely joined by popular South African YouTuber and overseas stance -show double Winner Tariq 'CHIP' Moosa. Tariq was in town to purchase an E12 535i and he was able to make it to the run this year again. It's probably his 6th or 7th time that he joined us on the Tunnel Run.
Tariq had a few things to sort out on the 535i to get it properly running, and with the help of Mansoor Parker, they made it possible to drive this and another 535i on the day, all the way to Worcester and back.
- Zaahir Hoosen, who owns one SA's hottest F8Xs, brought his car down from Joburg with another G80 M3 which belonged to his friend Suli.
- Aiden Adi and Leroy Roy drove their M3s from the Vaal.
- Mr Twoboys Nswamato joined us once again from 3 Rivers up in Gauteng, this time with his E34 M5. Last year he was with us in his E39M5.
To the Capetonians, the guys and ladies from all around the Western Cape, we would like to thank you for joining us on this day. A day which almost seemed impossible to carry on with. But through the support and patience of some individuals and clubs we were able to make it happen. We asked you to bring lekker vibes, and the vibe was too lekker. Thank You!!!
Clubs that supported us on rthe day were :
- SUPREME TECHNIK
- BM SQUAD
- BMW CAR CLUB CAPE TOWN
- MPOWER CUSTOMS
- THE E92 CREW

just to name few
Unfortunately the illegal spinning is causing yet more frustration and blockage, so we will see about next year.
